UNC Alumni Team Edges Duke

A team of UNC alumni and supporters defeated their Duke counterparts at the sixth Carlyle Cup Team Championship at Pinehurst on October 11-13. In the closest golf event ever staged, the Tar Heels edged out to a 22-18 lead after Monday's four-ball play on Pinehurst No. 2 and the Nike Captain's Pick Shootout on course No. 4.

Late in Tuesday's action on Pinehurst No. 8, the overall score was actually deadlocked before Carolina won several swing points to pull out a 41-35 victory, which was not assured until the last two matches came off the course at 3 p.m.

The Tar Heels have won four of the six Team Championships played. UNC Director of Golf Johnny Cake has been the Carolina team captain for all six years and played the last two Carlyle Cups. UNC-Finley head pro Mike Wilkinson served as assistant captain. Duke's captain this year was new men's golf coach Jamie Green. Twenty-four golfers on each team competed in the Ryder Cup format event.
