Duke and UNC have nominated eight student-athletes who excelled last fall in the third annual Carlyle Cup competition.
TAG Heuer, makers of fine Swiss watches since 1860, annually presents a Most Outstanding Athlete award to one student-athlete at Duke and UNC each season. Duke's first two winners were basketball star Jason Williams and women's golf National Champion Virada Nirapathpongporn. UNC winners have been field hockey star Kristen McCan and football quarterback Ronald Curry.
Duke's TAG nominees for the fall are Jordan Cila, men's soccer; Thora Helgodottir, women' soccer; Michael Hatch, men's cross country; Clara Horowitz, women's cross country; and Alex Wade, football.
The UNC nominees are Meredith Keller, field hockey; Molly Pyles, volleyball; and Dan Orner, football.
Cila, Duke's high-scoring junior forward from Jericho, NY, scored the game's only goal in the Blue Devils' 1-0 victory at Duke. He wowed the 4,800 fans at the game with his 30-yard blast in the contest's 51st minute to earn Duke three points in the competition.
Helgodottir, the junior goalkeeper from Kopavogur, Iceland, paced the Duke women to a 0-0 tie at UNC. Helgodottir notched nine saves as the Blue Devils held off a number of UNC charges in the October contest. The tie earned Duke 1.5 points in the Carlyle Cup series.
Hatch, a sophomore from Greenville, S.C., paced the Duke men to a second place finish in the ACC Cross Country Championships, covering the 8K course in Atlanta in 24:51.3 to place 8th overall.
Horowitz, a freshman from Berkeley, Calif., raced to a fourth place finish as the Duke women ran to a fourth place team showing. She completed the 5K course in Atlanta in 21:11.1. The two cross country teams combined to earn the one Carlyle Cup point for Duke for the third straight year.
Wade, the durable fullback from Newton, Pa., rumbled for 138 yards and one touchdown during the football game, including a three-yard touchdown run with 35 second left in the first half to tie the game. Wade was also named the TAG Heuer Player of the Game honor on the Duke Radio Network, earning the general scholarship fund for Duke University $500 compliments of TAG Heuer.
UNC's Keller, a senior midfielder from Greenville, Del., played a key role in both of Carolina's field hockey wins over Duke in 2002. Keller scored the winning goal in the 97th minute of play as the Tar Heels won the first match, 5-4, in double overtime. Keller assisted on two goals in the rematch, a 3-1 Carolina victory.
Pyles, a sophomore outside hitter from Hendersonville, N.C., recorded 35 kills and 28 digs in two volleyball victories over the Blue Devils, while hitting .333 of her attempts.
Orner, a junior from Warwick, N.Y., kicked a game-winning 47-yard field goal as time expired to give Carolina a dramatic 23-22 win over Duke and extend UNC's football win streak to 13th straight against the Blue Devils. Quarterback Darian Durant, who returned from a broken thumb to throw for one touchdown pass and run for another, was named the TAG Heuer MVP on the Tar Heel Sports Network, earning $500 for the UNC General Scholarship Fund from TAG Heuer.
More nominees for the season-ending TAG Heuer Most Outstanding Athlete will be added as the school year progresses. Carlyle Cup winter competition commences on January 20 with women's basketball at UNC. The overall point score after the fall is Carolina 11.5, Duke 5.5. It takes 24 points to win the Cup.
