The Duke Blue Devils rather decisively claimed the one point which is awarded for fencing in the 2002-03 Carlyle Cup competition. In four dual meets over a three week period the Blue Devils' men's and women's teams combined to outscore North Carolina 69-39.
The two teams met in dual match play at State College, Pa. On January 25 with the Duke women beating UNC 17-10 and the Blue Devil men beating Carolina 17-10.
The teams met again at Durham, N.C. on February 8 with the Duke men winning16-11 and the Duke women 19-8.
Combined with 1.5 points that Duke earned in women's tennis on February 7 with a 6-1 win over North Carolina, Duke has cut UNC's lead in the
competition to 12.5-11 heading into the final two winter sports events--women's basketball at Duke and men's basketball at North Carolina.
Each of those games will be worth 1.5 points.
