UNC Adds Six TAG Trophy Nominees

On the strength of its Carlyle Cup-clinching springs sports performance, UNC has added six nominees for the TAGHeuer Trophy, emblematic of the top Tar Heel athlete in the annual competition with Duke.

In Men's Golf, sophomore Dustin Bray from Asheboro won ACC individual title in the ACC Championships by two shots with a 205, 11-under-par total as UNC finished ahead of Duke in the team competition to earn the three Carlyle Cup points.

Kellie Thompson, a senior from Grasonville, Md., scored five goals and had an assists in UNC's 10-4 regular-season win over Duke in Women’s Lacrosse and then and had three goals and an assist to preserve Carolina’s three Carlyle Cup points in the 12-8 win over Duke in the ACC Tournament semifinals.

In Men's Lacrosse, junior Austin Garrison from New Canaan, Conn., had three goals in Carolina's 9-7 win during the regular season to secure the three Carlyle Cup points.

Junior Trystan Meniane of Martinque, France, upset Michael Yani, the 58th ranked player in the country, 7-6, 6-2, in UNC’s 4-3 loss to Duke during the regular season in Men’s Tennis.

In Women's Tennis, Kate Pinchbeck, a junior from Edmonton Park, Australia, won two of three singles matches and two of three doubles matches this year against Duke, including the ACC championship clinching match.

Coretta Brown, a junior from Statesboro, Ga., averaged 19.0 points and 3.7 assists per game in three losses against the Blue Devils in Women’s Basketball.

The TAGHeuer Trophy will be presented to UNC’s Most Outstanding Athlete in the Carlyle Cup next fall.
