Duke took home the one Carlyle Cup point in Cross Country by finishing higher in the combined competition with UNC in the ACC Championships at Clemson on October 27.
The Duke men's cross country team placed third while the women finished fifth. Carolina was eighth in the men's side and placed second in women's races.
Duke's men finished third with 94 points, paced by last year's individual champion, senior Sean Kelly, who covered the 8,000 meter course in a time of 24:40.6 and finished seventh. Kelly was followed by teammates freshman Robert Smitson (15th place, 25:05.8), freshman Michael Hatch (21st, 25:18.7), junior Jared Moore (24th, 25:22.9) and sophomore Chris Williams (28th, 25:33.2).
Matt Weiss was the top finisher for the UNC in 23rd place as the men's team finished with 221 points. Weiss ran 25:21.2 over the 8K course in placing 23rd and was followed by Tar Heels Brian McGovern (46th, 26:14.2), Greg Remaly (51st, 26:35.3), Matt Daly (56th, 26:47.5) and Hunter Graham (57th, 26:54.4).
On the women's side UNC was second with 55 points, paced by individual champion Shalane Flanagan, who ran 20:34.3 over the 6K course in taking her second title. Teammate Carol Henry finished eighth in 21:34.2 and was named Freshman of the Year. Henry was followed by Tar Heel Kim Timberlake in ninth at 21:34.9. Flanagan, Henry and Timberlake were each named to the ACC All-Conference Team.
Duke placed fifth with 136 points, led by freshman Paige Miller, who covered the 6,000 meter course in 22:04.0 and finished 14th. Miller was followed by fellow freshmen Paris Edwards (23rd place, 22:26.8) and Meaghan Leon (30th, 22:41.7), as well as senior Maddy Woodmansee (33rd, 22:52.8) and sophomore Laura Schmid (39th, 23:05.8).
In the overall team calculation, Duke won the Carlyle Cup point by finishing with 230 points, compared to Carolina's total of 276
