UNC NOMINATES FIVE FOR TAG HEUER TROPHY

UNC has named five athletes as nominees for the "Tag Heuer Trophy" given at the end of the school year to the Tag Heuer Most Valuable Athlete in the Carlyle Cup competition between Carolina and Duke.

Susan Bush, a sophomore forward from Houston, scored three goals and added two assists, thus figuring in on five of Carolina's six goals in the 6-1 regular-season women's soccer triumph over the Blue Devils on Sept. 29 at a packed Fetzer Field.

Kristen McCann starred in both of UNC's field hockey wins over Duke. The senior from Macungie, Pa., scored two goals in Carolina's 3-0 win in Chapel Hill on Aug. 26. Then, in the Oct. 1 rematch at Duke, McCann scored the winning goal with 9:42 to play, tipping in a pass by Jana Toepel, to secure the 2-1 victory.

Freshman David Stokes scored his first career goal, the game-winner, in Carolina's 4-2, come-from-behind men's soccer victory at 10th-ranked Duke on Oct. 1. The win was Carolina's first over Duke since 1996, breaking a four-game losing streak in the series, and catapulting the Tar Heels on to an eventual No. 1 ranking and the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to two-time defending champion Indiana.

Laura Greene, a sophomore from Yadkinville, N.C., was the Tar Heel star in Carolina's two volleyball wins over the Blue Devils. She posted a total of 44 kills and 24 digs and six block assists in the home-and-home matches, both won by UNC 3 games to 2. Ronald Curry became just the third Tar Heel to rush for 100 yards and throw for 200 in the same game, when the junior from Hampton, Va., led the football Tar Heels to a resounding 59-21 win at Duke on Nov. 18. Curry rushed 10 times for career-high 105 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also completed 18 of 24 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns.

The Tag Heuer Trophy is sponsored by Tag Heuer Watch Company, and the Carlyle Cup by Carlyle & Co. jewelers.
