UNC quarterback Ronald Curry and Duke women's golf All-America Virada
Nirapathpongporn have earned the TAGHeuer Most Outstanding Athlete
Awards for their respective schools in the 2001-2002 Carlyle Cup competition.
Curry and Nirapathpongporn will each receive the “TAG Trophy” sponsored by TAGHeuer Watch Company, a participating sponsor in the Carlyle Cup.
Curry, a senior from Hampton, Va., passed for 217 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another score in UNC’s 52-17 win over Duke, Carolina’s 12th straight football victory in the series. Curry set numerous school records in his four-year career, including becoming Carolina’s all-time total offense leader.
As a sophomore, Nirapathpongporn, a Bangkok, Thailand native, finished second at the ACC Golf Championships in helping to guide the Blue Devils to the title and capture the women's golf points in the Carlyle Cup competition. Nirapathpongporn later led Duke to the NCAA team title while winning the NCAA individual title with a school-record and NCAA record-tying score of 279 (nine under par).
Duke’s other 2002-2003 Most Outstanding Athlete Nominees for TAGHeuer Trophy were Jason Williams and Mike Dunleavy (men’s basketball), Alana Beard and Iciss Tillis (women’s basketball), Sean Kelly (men’s cross country), Joanna Hingle (rowing), Kelly McCain and Amanda Johnson (women’s tennis) and Phillip King (men’s tennis).
Carolina’s other nominees for 2001-2002 were Kerry Falgowski (field hockey), Laura Greene (volleyball), Logan Pause (men’s soccer), Elizabeth Ball (woman’s soccer), Dustin Bray (men’s golf), Kellie Thompson (women’s lacrosse), Austin Garrison (men’s lacrosse), Trystan Meniane (men’s tennis), Kate Pinchbeck (women’s tennis) and Coretta Brown (women’s basketball).
UNC captured the Carlyle Cup in 2001-2002 by the score of 31-17. Duke won the inaugural Cup in 200-2001, 27-21.
