Marion Lyndon of Asheboro, NC, was presented with the grand prize in the Predict the Winner Sweepstakes of the Carlyle Cup inaugural year.
The grand prize, a steel and gold Link wristwatch by Tag Heuer, is valued at $2,295.
The Sweepstakes, which began in January, challenged fans to predict the final score of the first-ever Carlyle Cup competition between the UNC and Duke athletic teams. Weekly prizes included $100 gift certificates from Carlyle & Co. Jewelers, tickets to the UNC-Duke men's basketball contests and a trip to the 2001 ACC men's basketball tournament in Atlanta. The deadline for entries was April 2. Ms.
Lyndon, a Duke fan, was among several who predicted the final score of 27 to 21 in favor of the Blue Devils. Her entry was selected from all correct predictions in a random drawing at the end of the school year.
The Carlyle Cup competition, sponsored by Carlyle & Co. Jewelers, is a yearlong contest in which UNC and Duke teams earn points for head-to-head contests in 20 sports. The school with the most points at the end of the school wins the Carlyle Cup and gets to keep the sterling silver and enamel urn until the end of the next school year.
