Carolina Takes Early 6-0 Lead in Carlyle Cup
Field hockey, men's soccer and volleyball give Tar Heels early cushion.

Carolina got out to an early 6-0 lead in the second-annual Carlyle Cup competition with wins over Duke on Saturday in field hockey, men's soccer and volleyball.

Carolina's second-ranked field hockey team scored UNC's first Carlyle Cup points of the year with a 5-0 win over No. 10 Duke at Henry Stadium. The win was Carolina's 45th consecutive against Duke in field hockey.

Logan Pause provided all the offense in UNC's 1-0 victory over Duke Saturday evening in men's soccer. Pause, expected to miss the entire 2001 season due to injury, found the back of the net early in the second half to score the game-winner. It was Carolina's first win over Duke at Fetzer Field since 1993 and earned Carolina three points in the Carlyle Cup.

Meanwhile, the Tar Heel volleyball team topped the previously unbeaten Blue Devils 3-1 to move into first place in the ACC and gain an additional 1.5 points in the Carlyle Cup for six points overall on the day.

Carolina will take its 6-0 lead into Tuesday night's women's soccer game in Durham.

The Carlyle Cup competition, sponsored by Carlyle & Co. Jewelers, is a year-long contest in which UNC and Duke teams earn points for head-to-head contests in 20 sports. The school with the most points at the end of the school wins the Carlyle Cup and gets to keep the sterling silver and enamel urn until the end of the next school year.

Last year, the Tar Heels got off to a hot start in the fall before Duke overcame Carolina in the spring and won the competition 27-21.
